Diamond Aged Care Home to provide spiritual support  for a good precious final journey.

Time flies and people grow old. The sadder truth is that people whom we love and care for around us inevitably grow old. As children, we will be the ones to take care of our beloved parents and grandparents, but who is to care and love for abandoned old folks? Who can they depend on?

In a recent newspaper reported that 675,000 Malaysian citizens aged 60 and above have been abandoned and do not receive financial support from their children. Meanwhile in August 2011, the Women, Family and Community Development Minister Datuk Seri Shahrizat Abdul Jalil confirmed the number of senior citizens in Malaysia to be 2.1 million, constituting 7.3% of the total population (28.8 million). The article can be read here.

To put the big picture in better view, the National Population and Housing Census by Malaysian Department of Statistic projected that the percentage of Malaysian population aged 60 years and above to be 9.9% in 2020; While the United Nations (UN) has projected that Malaysia will become an aged nation by 2030 when 15% of its population will be above 60 years old.

Role of MBCS

With such little time before Malaysia becomes an aged nation, MBCS is preparing to enter the aged care industry with the long term view of offering an elderly care home, which provides affordable and high quality services to the underserved Malaysian aged community.

In budget 2011, the Government has allovated RM1.2 billion to the Ministry of Women, Family and Community Development to carry out various welfare and community programs. RM166 million was allocated to welfare assistance for senior citizens.

MBCS, being a non-profit oriented cooperative society will focus on social care services and activities as follows:

  • Organize annual Chinese New Year and Mooncake Festival entertainment events to residents from old folk homes in the Klang Valley
  • Provide simple, economical , dignify yet quality Chinese funeral services and also subsidize funeral services for the less fortunate, regardless of ethnicity and background
  • Offer counseling support for the dying persons and their family members

As MBCS has been organizing funeral services to its members and the Chinese community, the elderly care service will be a fantastic value-added service:

  • To assist and support dual income families in caring for their elderly family members
  • To provide counseling support to the elderly for a good final journey
  • To encourage regular visits to the elderly for emotional support
  • To acknowledge social needs of the elderly who have skills to contribute in home activities

Mother Theresa said “Being unwanted, unloved, uncared for, forgotten by everybody, I think that is a much greater hunger, a much greater poverty than the person who has nothing to eat.”

Support from Consultants

Charles Gould, International Cooperative Alliance (ICA) Director General arranged for Dr. Emi Kiyota to help in architectural plan development of MBCS Diamond Aged Care Home. Dr Emi, an Environmental Gerontologist, currently serves as a consultant to implement person-centered care practice and has developed ageing valued community projects in Sri Lanka, Bhutan, and the Ivory Coast. To this end, Emi has formed Ibasho, embodying the Japanese concept of “a place where one feels at home being one’s self” with a group of like-minded colleagues.

Dr Emi also arranged Prof Philip Poi Jun Hua, Head of Geriatrics, University of Malaya to help in Diamond Aged Care Home Project.

MBCS has submitted an application to Petaling Land Office for a 10,000 sq.ft. vacant state land in the vicinity of PJ to build a Diamond Aged Care Home. We seek your support to raise funds for this Project. Therefore, we humbly request your support to make this vision a reality. We hope and trust that you will be able to support us either in big or small possible ways to embark in this noble venture to meet your requirement as a future resident. Thank you!
